This weekend, I gave my girlfriend’s dad a nice computer with Linux mint installed. I put a shortcut to windows 11 setup to run in virtualbox, in case there were things that he felt he needed windows for (to spare him the frustration of needing to tinker too much if he didn’t want to).

I assume that the downvotes are from you and I notice that you haven’t shared the information. I think that is a good and appropriate response. To really drive in your point, why don’t you post the names and phone numbers of the three people you contact most frequently. Don’t worry, those numbers are already in the phone book. It’s ok, you’re just sharing publicly available information.

Can we see your photo album, all credit card transactions, amazon purchase history, GPS location data, credit score? We promise only to sell this info to other people, use it to sell you stuff, raise your insurance rates, tell us where to focus our funding for political campaigns. Don’t worry, we’ll only save it forever and you can be assured that we’ll feed this into AI models 10 or 20 years from now, along with everyone else’s data, establishing a massive cache of information from which incredible inferences will be possible. That seems 100% fine to me. If you’re looking for an excuse, by all means upgrade but those numbers seem acceptable.

Windows 11 is enshitified enough to be annoying and loaded with government and corporate spyware enough to be alarming. Meanwhile, Linux has become user friendly, optimized for everything but the latest hardware and capable of running most games.

I don’t know how the timing of each release is planned but the Firefox website gives instructions for using the repositories for esr, beta, nightly, or dev edition.

Just using Debian as your distro doesn’t lock you into firefox ESR.
