@MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works yeah, as displays get added these can be very helpful for deaf people as well since they already offer real-life captions for conversations for example.
Interested in all things fedi, uspol at least for this year, technology. Loving Sharkey.

@Buffalox@lemmy.world I’m not saying these companies wouldn’t want to have it constantly on if they could though, Meta already made a video where they showed that it is exactly what they’d like to do at some point in the future if the hardware was able to.

@Buffalox@lemmy.world in what demonstrated uses is it doing that? I’ve only seen it observe when asked to in any of the demos and that’s certainly how Meta’s current glasses do it - you have to request it to take a look.
Meta’s live AI mode does let you have a continuous conversation about your surroundings but that something that you also have to ask for on purpose and that will consume a considerable amount of battery.

@Buffalox@lemmy.world @ChaosMonkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com what are you basing this idea that they’re constantly recording on? I haven’t seen anything that says that is the plan for Google or the case for any current devices and at least for now the battery life concerns are probably something that just prevents it from being a possibility.

@tonytins@pawb.social a bit sensational way to frame this. There’s no evidence that the cited examples in the original article are a result of the changes or that they’re necessarily making changes that would make the Waymo Driver less safe.
There’s that potential and the mentioned real problems are worth some attention regardless but some of these changes sound like they’re motivated by just addressing situations where Waymo is unable to make the decisions any safe driver would because there are conflicting rules to follow for example…

@Gullible@sh.itjust.works There isn’t a problem that could not be solved by legislation here. The police is already able to give tickets to self-driving cars in some states. You can certainly argue that the megacorps aren’t inclined to care when the amount of money involved is tiny but then again that problem exists in most places just as much when it comes to fining rich people. You could always up the amounts if the politicians are willing to do that.
The more consequential thing that can already be done currently is grounding the entire fleet if there’s a good reason for that so it’s not like officials are completely helpless.

@artyom@piefed.social I saw a headline that they’re open to other vendors using it. With the Deck it took them a long time and there’s still not any kind of public build process AFAIK though.

@MoonlitSanguine@lemmy.zip @jcs@lemmy.world it would certainly be good for it to be relatively affordable but they’re really not promising it will at the moment since they only said aiming it to be cheaper than an Index.
@JackbyDev@programming.dev @return2ozma@lemmy.world well that’s still Waymo’s argument I think. Elon is a bit different in many ways…
