Umm, the steam deck hasn’t existed long enough for that to be a thing, it only came out 4 years ago. I have mine from September release year and use it every day, fresh as the day I got it. I’d be pretty hacked off if it seemed ‘old and dying’ already! And it’s my only decent computer, I need it to be going for several more years 😅

I’d go one step further. This kind of ‘tool’ is not fixing a problem that doesn’t exist. It is actively causing a problem that didn’t exist, and doesn’t need to (along with the charlatans peddling the AI application-slop ‘services’). I’ve heard from hiring managers of people trying things like this, and it:

1. Categorically does not work, no-one is fooled
2. Results in extra barriers needing to be erected.

Ultimately, it makes an already brutal interview landscape 1000x worse, for no benefit to anyone.

And even if you did somehow manage to, once you’re actually doing the job, you’d get found out pretty quickly… I’ve heard of people trying this nonsense, and there is no scenario where it works put for anyone, it wastes everyone’s time, and just puts up more barriers to stop genuine hard working people accessing the jobs that actually fit them. Yes, the interview landscape can be brutal at the moment, but ‘tools’ like this are the problem, not the solution.

Umm, yes they do. Look at copilot (as one recent example). The full range of opinion I’ve ever encountered goes from apathy to hatred. (Never heard of anyone having anything positive to say about it, the ‘nicest’ thing being to the effect of ‘I just ignore it, so I don’t care’). And yet, Microsoft’s attitude is that ‘the user is wrong, deal with it’, and this has always been the case in both Windows and Mac OS, while the various OSS DEs attempt to fix real user frustrations.

Many of the points they make are true for GNOME specifically, but thankfully, there are plenty of other options, and Linux != GNOME.

This particular change may seem innocuous in itself, but the idea of compliance with ridiculous laws like this one, in one jurisdiction, being implemented in a project used globally will result in compromising everyone’s privacy/security, regardless of whether they are even subject to that law or not.

Precisely. SSD puts the decorations in the hands of your window manager, which allows you to customise what information and controls are available in the title bar (or if you even want to display one at all), so you can use the space much more efficiently. With CSD, you’re down to the whims and opinions of the application, and their space-wasting choices (and whether they even choose to respect your theming).

That kind of case makes sense, actually.

Wow, that’s wild. I guess that’s what you get from being such a young/niche project, they haven’t had the time/demand to come up against the problems that all the other distros had to solve years ago.

I DLed Cachy with the torrent. Another thing I wish more distros would offer, haha!

I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a distro that doesn’t offer a torrent download option, since it saves the project expensive hosting costs.

That’s not quite true, it’s a very specific reason for losing your job. If you are fired for doing a bad job, and said you were made redundant, that would be a lie. Redundancy is about the role, not the individual.

It’s not quite the same thing. If you are ‘fired’ that’s generally to do with performance or conduct of the individual. Redundancy is about not needing (or affording) the role any more (i.e. it is redundant). There are specific legal protections for each case that work quite differently. (You cannot rehire for the same position after a redundancy, for example)

Possible counterpoint: their use as a generic is isolated within the US (maybe some other countries, but certainly not universal), whereas ‘google’ has arguably become a pretty global term (at least in the Anglophone world, and I believe in some other languages, too), so the reach is very different in scope.

(e.g. Despite Kleenex still a big brand in the UK, nobody uses it as a generic. The product is called a ‘tissue’)

Where are you running du -sh *? (I.e. what directory, are you definitely scanning the whole file system?) I’m sure it’s obvious, but can never hurt to check!

What does du -sh / show? (Generally, the * glob pattern in the shell will not match hidden dot-files, so is it possible they are being excluded?)

Why would you use an LLM for this? This sounds like a process easily handled by conventional logic, which would be cheaper, faster, and actually reliable… (The ‘notes’ part notwithstanding I guess, but calculations in general are definitely not a good use of an LLM)
