Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Anyone have Rocket League running smoothly on Gnome?English
1·7 months agoThank you so much. You’ve given me some things to think about. Wayland may be the way to go…I probably want to upgrade from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04, too, to get a newer version of GNOME. It may be that I want to move off Ubuntu…but that will be a whole process…
We’ll see how it goes…thanks again

4·7 months agoWhoops sorry. Yeah, I’m running with Proton. Pretty sure with the native version you can’t play online. I’ll try prime-run, but I’m not sure it will help – fairly certain Rocket League is using the NVIDIA GPU (btw, I can’t actually find a manpage for prime-run or nvidia-prime – do you know what
game-performancedoes?)Thanks
Edit: Thanks for linking that protondb page. Didn’t know that existed. Finally found another reference to a different issue I had with RL (controller rumble during boost cuts out after about 2s) that Ive researched before but couldnt find any info. Now if only there were a solution lol

11·10 months agoEvery few years I get the customization bug and trick out my desktop. Then things start breaking down slowly. Then I get frustrated and reinstall vanilla gnome, swear off customization forever, and feel better.
For gaming its Plasma.
Knowing the default DE’s idiosyncrasies also helps with work – I’m never surprised when I reinstall/install a new machine. Same goes for aliases. No for me, knowing the commands themselves, however cumbersome or verbose, helps me better deal with freshly installed machines.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why Techdirt Is Now A Democracy Blog (Whether We Like It Or Not)English
411·10 months agoThere’s a perspective that some technologically literate people have (not all of them, certainly) that enables them a clearer view of what is going on re: tech oligarchs. That is how much we rely on other people’s computers. Most people don’t think about what is going on when they browse a website or post something on social media, set up their own shop on squarespace, sell a product on Amazon, stream music or TV or movies or games.
Giant tech companies own it all. They own the computer you use to do all these things. They own the computers other smaller businesses use to run their companies. You invented a product and want to drive your cart to the market square? Pay a tax to King Bezos, the market square is Amazon. Did you make a game? Pay Gaben and you can sell it at his marketplace. Don’t wanna use these marketplaces? Wanna set up your own shop? You still have to use Amazon’s, or Microsoft’s, or Google’s computers.
These tech oligarchs are more like feudal lords – enclosing lands (computers) and charging the peasants and merchants access to them.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Firefox loosing its full screen on gnome. Anyone else see this.English
3·11 months agoI think I have seen a similar issue. Mine is that sometimes my firefox gets stuck in the background and I can click the icon in my dock to maximize it. Nothing happens. I have to hit the Windows key to view all my windows in that particular workspace, then click firefox to get it to the front. Sometimes it doesn’t work and I have to close out Firefox and reopen. Is that similar to what you’re seeing ?
TLDR:
you can use adb
