I think a lot of the Internet is going to end up shitted up with this kind of nonsense. While leaving Reddit certainly tackles one issue, having a way to filter out the rest of this shit would be useful.
I think the brave explorers are still here, they’re now just vastly outnumbered. The early Internet was full of those explorer types because they in particular tended to have enough interest to overcome the hurdles of getting on the Internet: namely computers being expensive and somewhat difficult to use. The early Internet was more accessible to intelligent, innovative users, and it reflected its user base. Many got online to explore and continued to explore and innovate once there.
Now millions have a user-friendly computer in their pocket, so practically anyone, even flat earthers, is capable and intelligent enough to use the Internet. Most are attracted not by exploration but by access to specific services that have been advertised to them, especially social media. The Internet continues to reflect its user base, but the user base’s composition has… changed. Let’s just call it changed.
Don’t forget well-meaning advice from someone incompetent who failed upwards but still lacks the self-awareness to see it. I’ve had a few of those.

I had to verify the current situation in the United States is what you stated because it’s intuitively so wrong. I can’t believe an employer can set terms for compensation and, through no fault of the employee, legally prevent that employee from completing those terms.

This is correct. I’m a Prius driver. I get 45-55 mpg on the highway, depending on conditions. If it’s just city driving, I get 55-65 mpg. I’ve had as high as 72 mpg, many years ago driving Uber downtown.
I’m at five years for ours. We used the included ‘teaser’ toner cartridge for almost three years. After the first year, it warned us the toner was low. We laughed and turned the warning off and it just continued to provide toner for nearly another two years.
We now have an “extra large” toner cartridge. Like owning a parrot, my wife and I expect it’ll outlast both of us and our children or grandchildren will get stuck with it. We’re both 35.
Why do you think they were worse before?
It seems like the Internet has allowed them to band together to reinforce and validate each other’s stupidity. I think they’re far bolder than before but I’m willing to change my mind.

I’m one of the mods of a few subs even though I’m no longer active. I hopped on yesterday and had a chat with the remaining mods of a couple of subs. They’ve been SO busy moderating assholes, propagandists, aggressive conspiracy theorists, and spam bots. They’re suspending and banning accounts every day or two when it used to be an account or two every month. These are all small to medium sized, niche subs dedicated to helping people and sharing various ideas and people are trolling and harassing users like they’ve never seen before.
I checked out some of the subs’s contents and in short order found I let myself get sucked into trying to educate an anti-masker in a sub that really shouldn’t attract that type. It went how you’d expect, and it made me realize I haven’t had a single interaction like that on Lemmy. It’s nicer here.
