Makes sense, I’m so accustomed to making virtual machines and such that it becomes just a thing but inevitably at some point admin access was required to create the hypervisor, the vnic, a virtual switch, etc. Without that restriction a piece of malware could readily exfiltrate data past a local protection by just making it’s own new pathway through on the fly or any number of other unpleasant things.

I recall using an app way back when I used to root and haxor all the mobiles that would do this. Kind of a virtualbox for the Nexus phones/tablets, but it needed root to do it. Will have to look into this, would be interesting if it can do so in user space somehow.

Edit: Damn, still needs root. Was a longshot to be able to hook into system resources without it but was hoping for some bridge function.

I guess do you mean with the cartoonish demeanor or just boxing ones as a whole? Have seen a few on playstation systems like knockout kings but they try and be all serious with it.

Not contracted monopolies or direct city run, but like ‘IAAS’ seems to work. Much like how you see some small cell companies providing unique offers riding on one of the big carriers networks. Often those small carriers provide better deals, particularly when the carriers they ride on are forced to sell wholesale access at reasonable rates.

The city selling wholesale access funds the infrastructure maintenance and the carriers are better able to compete with each other since all they really have to do is set up a router and pay the city’s access rate fees.

Not so far off, providing infrastructure locally then leaves a lot of the major transit to backbone carriers to make the interconnects. Those providers are largely transparent to the end users. Now nationalizing carriers like that would be a hefty lift, but if we can take the local service out of the ISPs hands it would let the municipal hosts negotiate those peering arrangements in bulk. How many towns are well equipped to handle that might be another matter though.

Pretty well every case I’ve read of municipal owned fiber nets has been a grand success, barring interference by the local carriers. Let the city own the infra and the carriers compete for access. Of course you get the whinging about ‘muh free market/choice’ but that’s the case for any public works really.

Hard to say, but with how few sizeable chunks of natural stone/metal meteors make it through it’s tough to expect some relatively fragile satellites would survive the trip down.

I know it exists, have gotten it working with one of those AD compatible samba based DCs before, but not without some messing about. I’d really like to see it as simple as it is in Windows before saying it’s a drop in replacement.

Tried the other day with Mint and ran into something where one of the searches promoted manually editing the hosts file to point to the DC and Kerberos address. That kind of thing shouldn’t be required and is the kind of buggery I’d like to see sorted out.

I have not, the last time I made a real effort at moving to Nix for games was quite a while ago. The big factor is if I can get GOG working since that’s the preferred platform here.

Probably worth a shot. I’ve gotten it working on a version of Ubuntu in the past, but it was far from the simplicity of select domain, give join creds, and reboot that it is with Windows yet.

3 things I’m still looking to get in one distro and Windows will be gone. Not looking to have my desk/lap turn into another ad platform like phones did.

Easy drive mapping for remote shares, most have this but some are a bit clunky.

Solid games support, mostly a WINE thing. One called Bazzite looks promising with a pile of pre-configured profiles.

Easy and reliable connection to a DC so the same creds can be used across multiple machines. This is probably the hardest part in Nix at this point.

Otherwise pretty well every app I use is web based and hosted on some local server, or has a Nix native variant.

I’ve been a user of GOG for a while principally because of the no-drm ability to download a copy of what you bought. When the library starts getting past a certain size though you start to wonder about those things like what if the producer has a falling out and wants to yank it from the platform, does it vanish from my library then too? Are there contracts that say ‘forever’ when they offer it? Would love to find some ‘download all’ option to take a full copy offline of the bought items at once but it’d probably overrun the monthly ISP limits even if they had one.

Seen too many things on Netflix or Spotify that I liked vanish because ‘fuck off, we can’ and although I never anticipated it being ‘bought’ in those cases it does give a lot of justification to find alternate means to reestablish that access.

I guess it depends on what you’re looking for and what you consider flashy. I tend to do most of mine from GOG these days just out of a preference for avoiding DRM on principal. Found a few interesting ones just of the ‘cheap enough that it doesn’t matter if it’s not great’ types.

A major marker of quality for me tends to be if something just feels polished, like the menus make sense rather than looking like someone just stuck things where they could without though, but it could still run on a potato without making things melt.

Hardly the only, but not always the case either. I’d put some of it down to rose-colored nostalgia, some to the given fact that so much today is buying a base framework game and then selling 276 ‘addons’ to make it complete, and part to that back when systems didn’t have the power they do now developers couldn’t rely so much on all the flashy imagery and effects so they put more effort into the story and unique gameplay. A lot of smaller studio games pull that latter part off today still, but they’re sometimes harder to find.

It’s the only version I’ve come across as a pre-installed option for bought systems, particularly from Dell. A big thing going for it is if you search ‘how to do X in Linux’ you can pretty safely bet some or even most top hits are Ubuntu related.

Crowded spaces it’s a problem, I was more talking to notion of just plain shooting them rather than a use case. A rifle would be dang near impossible, but a scattered spray, you really only need to stop one prop and it’s probably on the ground for a standard 4 prop deal. At least mine got real screwy when a blade split mid flight.

Edit: It also could be noted that while a lot of pellets would miss, they would pose a lot less risk that a rifled bullet coming back down. The weight of an individual shot pellet is a fraction of the weight of a bullet, so less momentum, plus the don’t have a ballistic spin to maintain their speed that a rifle round does. Basically someone shooting a shot round in the air would come down with about as much force as a handful of gravel once the air resistance slows it a bit.

At range sure, nearby though an open choke shotgun would be pretty viable. Skeet shooting has been a thing for a while and unless it can change direction between the trigger and the pellets reaching it the drone’s likely at least impaired.
