Is Garuda a serious distro? Last I heard it was basically a few people’s hobby project. Not to say one shouldn’t use it, but I don’t know if it’s on par with EOS and Cachy.

I’ll just assume you’re serious and not trying to be a troll. Those aren’t launchers or different clients for the same game, they are different games. It’s the same as how Tux Cart isn’t compatible with Mario Kart. It’s just not the same thing. You also wouldn’t assume a Teardown mod works in Minecraft, just because both are voxel-based, right?

There are open source Minecraft launchers like Prism, those are cool and useful, and frankly way better than the official one, but they use a Microsoft account too, as your ownership of the game has to be verified, and you can’t connect to servers without one.

Stripped down to the bare essentials, those are similar. But surely you realize, that the sheer amount of content that was added over the years, and the enormous amount of mods, and the entire community, aren’t remotely comparable, right?

This is less of a Photoshop for drawing vs Krita and more of a Photoshop for image editing vs GIMP situation, and even that comparison is kind of unfair to GIMP.

The problem is, even if I am willing to deal with some inconveniences, many others aren’t. How am I going to move a server with >100 active users and multiple thousand inactive ones? And what about the six others I have that fit that description? There’s quite a few servers I could go without, but around a dozen that I’d much prefer not to lose.

I’ve already been trying, but people don’t like Revolt, Nerimity, Matrix, hell I tried Mattermost. Some people are fine with some of these platforms, but there is never any remote consensus.

At least some have cancelled their nitro subscription, making them a net loss for Discord in the future.

Discord has, despite everything, been my primary chat/social app and to switch to something else one has to uproot absolutely everything. That’s sadly not feasible.

This is basically the reverse of how the regular gaming communities treat Linux. Take a best case for “your team”, a worst case for the other, and then pretend it’s always that way.

It kind of reminds me of the whole Rust situation in a way. The evangelists were so heavy-handed that an active counter-movement developed, and with the adoption being wider the fanatics are heard less and what remains is their counterpart. We certainly aren’t quite there yet with the Linux discussion, but it seems to be what we’re heading towards.

Oh they have a lot to do with the decisions of politicians. But more on topics of economy and how they can profit as much as possible, rather than the supply of arms. Still I swear every second politician here is getting bribes “funds” from the car lobby.

I think part of it is that they can actually do anything long-term. Even the most altruistic president in for example the US will get four, at most eight years to do what they’re planning. That’s not enough time to do anything meaningful, all the while they’re dealing with flak from the consequences of the last presidency, and their successor will at best take credit for their achievements, at worst destroy them before they succeed. And that’s assuming the citizens didn’t elect a self-serving megalomaniac.

Winnie the pooh, I’m pretty sure, actually cares about his country. He’s by no means benevolent, but he has the power, resources, and time to build proper infrastructure and reshape the country as he sees fit.

Socially they’re way behind from what I, as an outsider, can tell. Women’s rights at least seem somewhat acceptable with definite room for improvement, but queer rights are even worse. Oh and there’s a literal genocide of Uyghurs so that’s pretty fucking bad.

But the benefits of China’s dictatorship lie in the fact that they can actually think in the long-term and not just until the next election (the politician’s equivalent of the next financial quarter) so they can wield their powers and resources to achieve these goals. The glorious leader must be praised for centuries to come, that can’t happen if the earth becomes uninhabitable due to climate change or the country crumbles in on itself due to failing education and a failing economy.

Now if only that applied to citizen’s rights…

My problem with that is mobile. If I want tasks, I’ll use a dedicated primarily mobile app, (e.g. Tasks.org) because if I’m checking a grocery list or tweaking my daily todo list while out of the house, I’m not gonna pull out my laptop lol

Of course it seems reasonable for more long-term plans which you don’t need to change day-to-day, but at that point I’d just end up with two to do lists/apps which is also a bother.

For me it’s pretty likely to replace it, at least on my laptop. Don’t get me wrong, I love Plasma, but per-screen workspaces and native window tiling are two features I never knew how much I needed before I tried out Hyprland some months back, especially on a single screen. While I’ll definitely miss the desktop panels and extensive settings menu, I’ll give those up for the other features without much of a second thought.

Note that it doesn’t mean metadata is encrypted. They may not know what you sent, but they may very well know you message your mum twice a day and who your close friends are that you message often, that kinda stuff. There’s a good bit you can do with metadata about messages combined with the data they gather through other services.
