I think it’s an x11/Wayland incompatability issue.
I guess there’s always Haiku?

I somehow could not find the Mint install so I went with Ubuntu Mate. It was fine.
I’m pretty sure antiX is designed for this specific use, but I have not run it personally. It’s based in Debian stable (which right now is Bookworm and will be Trixie pretty soon). I’m very fond of Debian. It’s not fancy, but it gets the job done.
Ubuntu Mate was my first distro and it helped me learn a lot, but I don’t really see a point in using Ubuntu over Debian. I never found it easier and you learn apt either way.
For me personally I install kitty terminal and integrate it with fish asap. Then I waste a bunch of time customizing it to my liking. My preferred text editor is Kate regardless of what DE I’m using and I usually get bleachbit for basic cleanup.
Thank you for your reply! I’ll check it out. I need to try remounting and double checking cables still, I’ve just been putting it on the back burner. Oddly enough I experience this problem much less often when using Gnome rather than KDE.
