I’m not commenting to pick on you but because I think it’s really important that people understand the details of laws so that they can make informed choices. People often think they have more rights or protections than they do, and they might not make the same choices if they knew otherwise.

If you are referring to FERPA, the decision about whether an email is an education record depends on the content and the context for which it is used. So having access to and using the information in the emails is not necessarily a violation so long as the personally identifiable information is not redisclosed.

Schools have a duty to ensure that the access is for “legitimate educational interests” which is subjective but I could see email tools or copilot being argued as meeting that.

I guess we won’t know until someone challenges it 😉

I don’t understand how these glasses could be permitted in a medical setting. It’s becoming more normal for medical offices here to record visits and use AI to transcribe the visit. Sure, there are concerns about those in terms of accuracy, and there is a risk of unauthorized access and systems failing, but there is a list of vetted products build to meet privacy and security requirements. Kinda the same way I am only permitted to use Copilot at work because the data is not sent back to be used in training models.

I don’t believe Meta has any such programs or versions?

Idk, if it’s offline it sure seems like meta can’t sell data from it so that’s costing them.

I was never able to really make all that stuff work in the first place so I’ve got three “smart” bulbs I bought in maybe 2018 that still (mostly) work, and am generally switching my smart plugs to mechanical timers because I only really use them for grow lights.

I do feel better about being away from home overnight in winter with my weather station (which includes a sensor inside the house) but everything adds nothing to my life at all.
