I’m not saying Zitron’s right but one easy way that his predictions could be wrong at this point but could emerge as correct in the future is basically the principle “the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.” In other words things could have been crazy 2 years ago but they maybe crazier now, and they may have yet more room to get astronomically crazy.
Yeah I think that’s the question. in short it’s fishing for a way to make it profitable, whole concept is when we pour enough money, servers, research etc… into it, eventually it will start making money faster than we put into it, and so far, that’s not been proven. Que old image of guys digging for diamonds, one walking away just before hitting the diamond jackpot, the other blindly charging towards it.
and of course just like reality, there’s no actual way to know if there’s even any diamonds… just that we haven’t found them yet.
Open AI is circling the drain right now. I think if their recently announced last ditch gimmick of free unlimited LLM prompt access doesn’t magically start making them money where their paid service already wasn’t, them be the first domino to fall, and start the cascade
OpenAI is considered of critical importance to the USA government, so much so that they’re saying it’s ok for AI companies like openAI to use whatever copyrighted material they want to train their LLMs.
OpenAI will survive, as long as the US govt survives and is its backer.
I think to understand my position a bit more, it’s worth considering how the US has approached international politics recently.
They knew they were going to bomb the shit out of Iran and cause massive oil price shocks. So a few months prior, they abducted the president of Venezuela, and declared Venezuela’s oil their own via military force – and an ongoing campaign of war crimes against fishermen in the region. They no longer see the point in ‘trading’, or the veneer of polite international politics, and are content to use military force to acquire assets for businesses. They have even threatened military force in the taking of Greenland, a region that’s part of a NATO partners traditional territory.
Seeing as they are prepared to use their massively lopsided military force in conflicts explicitly in the interests of American businesses, such as AI companies, I don’t think ‘money’ is the only metric at play in whether these companies stay around. Musk was literally pillaging America’s data systems under the guise of Doge, and the tech-fascists are very much integrated into the republican administration.
And yeah, these are the same people who partied with Epstein. They likely view the worst thing about the Epstein files situation, as being the audacity of the poors to think they have the right to hold their betters to any sort of accountability based on poor people morality. One reason they likely want their own regulation / law independent “freedom” cities, is so that they can have Epstein parties out in the open with zero risk, aside from STDs. So far, America’s shielded most of their rich pedophiles from any real fallout, but why should they even have to bother with such a nuissance, when they’re busy “earning” their billions by having bitchy low brow word fights on X.
They’d have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to make it work, and their investments are not what you’d need to do that. For a mere fraction of the cost of all these datacenter shaped money pits they could build world class research labs that would put the old bell labs to shame, but they…aren’t
Think of what would happen if you could pay the world’s smartest people in all fields of study $1 million a year salary to work on AI and AI adjacent research? That’s a rounding error at this scale

So the question us not if it is profitable (it isn’t) but when the money dries up

The US doesn’t have the money to keep this bubble inflated.

Knowing Bell Labs’ contributions… this is fucking radicalizing.

And since the USA is at war with half the world, the Pentagon will ensure that it never dries up.
