Postgresql is the database, Postgis is an extension. All modern databases are spatial, but postgis adds so much more. For example, maybe you reproject something with ArcGIS. In Postgis you simply select with the new projection on the fly.

You can clip, linear reference, compare, etc, all the spatial functions you do in a gis tool. Raster, vector, point data, etc.

Oh you want to share that thing you made? Lets get you started on the cloud/portal/server plan. Oh you want that server to have any kind of uptime? Better buy the monitor tool!

I move almost all GIS functions into SQL. Postgis is a miracle worker and foreign data wrappers in postgres are just awesome. If I need a viewer/editor than Qgis is fanstastic too.

ESRI has the nerve to come up with a way to make web pages and call them “Story Maps”. Get the hell out, that is just a web page!

But conversly, I quit windows when XP came out becausei wanted to stop playing Microsoft’s games. There were enshittifying back then and it only has got worse.

I even admin Microsoft systems for a living, have access to nearly every product that make for free, and I still will never use windows at home. Even managing azure or SQL databases or having to use products that are windows only I do it through a Linux machine. Sometimes by pushing commands, sometimes with remote desktop. But I do it because Linux just works, I can count on it. Not so much windows or Microsoft.

Maybe you are right. But I have seen users say it is harder to set up and then the behaviors of flatpaks can be challenging. I have had issues, and I know what I am doing.

Why not just fedora? All these Immutable distros seem like adding even more layers of confusing to someone new.

I was not defending any of the negatives of using computers, but relating how YES people complained about them all the way back then, and to some degree the argument never changed.

But we also know that predictive algorithms can be useful. For instance: digitizing a property line, or identifying features in a lidar cloud, or discovering anomalies in blood cells. Then there are prediction tests and what if scenarios.

I was going to say that to make this accurate they need to show the complete car for windows.

There is a copilot in the passenger seat writing down everything you do and making suggestions left and right, and the screen has to have ad’s on it.

In the past: Redhat, then Mostly Debian or Debian derivatives. Mepis was great for the time it was a thing (2003 - 2005). Also Gentoo for awhile.

Nowdays: Arch and Fedora mostly. I put Fedora on a laptop a couple of years ago while trying to see what would work with it and I have been extremely surprised by it. Packages are really up to date, I have gone through a major revision upgrade with no problem at all. Arch is great, but you have to pay attention and deal with change. Fedora is just as up to date but I don’t have to manage the changes.

And Fedora recently added KDE as an official release instead of a “spin” which is all the better. I hope they keep going, I read that they are not a big team and one of them just left.

It was great to trade and move value around. You could send to other countries, or do work for it. But Bitcoin fucked it all by basically being a ponzi scheme. I never bought crypto, I only traded, bartered, worked for it. I never put it on an exchange or used another company. Another sink of value and a stupid place to keep it. But that is the vast majority of people now.

So I wanted to see for myself.

Ubuntu… ugg the worst of all distros. I had issues with it since it came out. I never got why it took off. Although I did like their fonts, colors, and Unity. (Even as a KDE person).

So my experience: download Kubuntu. Install. Click update. It of course throws an error. I ignore it and click update again. This time it succeeds but it seemed like forever. Why is that? I can’t stress this enough: Nearly everytime I have tried to work with Ubuntu the very first thing it does is throw an error. Never a good look.

Anyways: Click on software center. Go to settings. Click enable Flatpack. Click on Flatpack add Flathub as a repository. (That step is a little confusing actually, but it is there). Search for Strawberry music player: it offers to add it from Flatpak.

No command line ever used.

The confusion sometimes comes from looking up info, which will lead to the command line. Becuase command line is always the easiest way to share information. Same thing with windows, when I go to fix stuff, they offer powershell. A dozen gui steps and pictures reduced to a single line.

Kubuntu require you to use a command line to get flatpaks? Usually it is just a toggle in a package manager. I think Fedora is on by default.

I would think you would want to do that in python anyways, regardless of the OS. I suppose it might be relative to what you want to do, there are several monte carlo applications for linux but they are focused on certain fields. Whats yours?
